The work of José Guadalupe Posada
José Guadalupe Posada's works are not easel paintings: they are images made to be printed thousands of times. His work lives in engraved plates and in the sheets printed from them, sold in markets, plazas and fairs.
Several themes run through his work: Day of the Dead calaveras, the crimes and events that shook the city, pulquería and fonda scenes, bullfights, miracles and religious images, and the political satire of the Porfiriato.
In the MUNAG collection you can see the plate and the print side by side: the metal plate mounted on wood, with the image raised and reversed, and the paper through which that image reached people.
Below you will find a selection. Posada's complete work can be filtered in the online catalog.
