Pre-Hispanic art in Mexico
Pre-Hispanic art in Mexico includes architecture, sculpture, painting, ceramics and goldwork. The MUNAG looks at it from a particular angle: graphic communication.
Its Pre-Hispanic room brings together clay stamps, stone beaters for making amate paper, stelae and reliefs with carved figures, stone and clay sculptures, and codex copies.
These pieces show that, long before the printing press, the peoples of Mesoamerica already had ways to repeat images, record information and make their own writing surfaces.
Below you will find a selection of pieces from the Pre-Hispanic room.
