Loa spoken by Sancho Panza and Doña Cenobia

José Guadalupe Posada

Printed on paper with the original "Loa dicha por Sancho Panza y Doña Cenobia en Honor de la Pureza de María Santísima", with an engraving by José Guadalupe Posada. Printed by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo in Mexico City in 1904. A loa is a brief piece performed before a play. This tradition was born in Spain at the end of the 15th century, just as the first explorers were reaching the Americas. The loa was used to put the audience in the right mood for the play, and also to pay tribute to the town or city, distinguished members of the audience and other institutions of the region.
